ULTRASOUND: Tiny Echoes. Clear Results.

Ultrasound produces sound waves that are beamed into the body causing return echoes that are recorded to “visualize” structures beneath the skin. The ability to measure different echoes reflected from a variety of tissues allows a shadow picture to be constructed.

The following tests require preparation before having your test performed:

Abdominal Ultrasound (Gallbladder, Pancreas, Liver, Spleen)

Nothing to eat after midnight. A light breakfast may be eaten the morning of your exam if you are scheduled for an afternoon appointment. For example: you may eat dry toast, black coffee, tea or clear broth. NO DAIRY PRODUCTS, NO FATS, NO CREAMS, NO OILS MAY BE EATEN. Water may be taken with your regular medication.

Renal/Kidneys

Any appointment time, morning or afternoon: NOTHING to eat for 4 hours.

Also, drink 24 ounces of water an hour before the appointment. DO NOT URINATE.

Female Pelvis

Drink 4 to 6 eight ounce glasses of water 1-1/2 hours prior to your exam and do not urinate. You must have a full bladder or the test cannot be performed. You may eat any foods – they will not affect your testing. DO NOT URINATE.

Male Pelvis

Drink 4 eight ounce glasses of water one hour before exam and do not urinate. Bladder must be full for exam. Light meal may be eaten. This will not affect your full bladder. DO NOT URINATE.
