The open MRI is open on all sides making it ideal for larger, claustrophobic, and pediatric patients. The wide bed allows patients to stretch out and relax, reducing anxiety. Our Open MRI is a High Field MRI ensuring excellent image quality. Patients often travel long distances for our High Field Open MRI. It is the only high field open MRI scanner within 100 miles.

Ideal for pediatric patients

Our open MRI is a perfect solution for pediatric patients without the need for sedatives. You or a loved one is able to sit next to your child during the MRI exam to ensure their comfort and calmness.

Information about your examination:

Prior to the exam you will be asked to remove all jewelry and metal objects. We recommend you leave all jewelry (except for a wedding band) and valuables at home.
Your hair must be dry before having an MRI. Do not wear any makeup or hair products with magnetic or metallic ingredients.
To obtain the best possible results it is important to remain still during the exam.
Immediately following the MRI, you may resume your normal activities unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

How do I prepare for an open MRI?

No special preparation is necessary before your exam. You may eat and drink as you normally do. We advise you to dress in clothes that are metal-free (no zippers, brass buttons, etc) for your exam. We can provide you with a dressing gown. Individual dressing rooms are available for your privacy; all metal objects, including coins and watches, will be kept safely in a locker. IMPORTANT: Claustrophobic patients must request a sedative prescribed by their physician.

What is the open MRI like?

The MRI contains a padded bed on which you will lie during the exam. A technologist will be in continual voice and visual contact with you. Exams normally last 45 minutes.

You will hear a knocking sound during the exam. Music of your choice can be played through headphones. We have XM radio or you are welcome to bring your own CD.

What if I am claustrophobic?

If you are claustrophobic, you must request a prescription for a sedative from your physician for you to pick up at your local pharmacy. Please also let our staff know that you will be taking a sedative as you will need to have a family member drive you to your appointment.
